Top Three Wall Socket Defects To Check in Your New BTO Unit

When you do an inspection of your BTO flat, you should have already prepared a defect check kit as well as equipped yourself with the knowledge regarding the proper use and function of the tools in the defect check kit. The most relevant device in uncovering potential faults in wall sockets is the socket tester. As for spotting the actual defects, it helps to know beforehand what constitutes a faulty wall socket. Here are the three most common wall socket faults that may be present in your new BTO unit, and you must absolutely ensure they are included in your home inspection checklist.

The Live and Ground Pins of the Sockets Have Been Swapped

A miswiring can happen, and it may lead to a dangerously misconfigured wall outlet where the wiring for the live pin is attached to the ground pin–and vice versa. You can quickly uncover this upon testing. To better understand the correct configuration of the standard three-prong socket used in HDB units, refer to this photo showing the internal parts of a plug that corresponds to Live, Neutral, and Earth points.

The Sockets Are Not Properly Installed

A slanted or dented socket is obviously not safe to leave uncorrected or even try to use. Do a thorough visual check of all the sockets in your home, and note any dents, misalignments, and other physical faults for later repair by the Building Service Centre (BSC).

The Silicon Casing of Sockets Are Not Properly Done Up

The silicon electrical outlet covers have imperfections. They may be uneven or asymmetrical, an indication of the quality of builder workmanship. Again, note these imperfections. Don’t miss even the slightest flaw since these are critical parts of your home’s electrical wiring system.

Remember that the BSC has jurisdiction over your HDB apartment’s wiring system; they can and will correct any issues in the sockets and wiring. Just be sure to submit a properly filled-out rectification request form online or to the nearest BSC branch.
